Bitcoin's BIP-110 Fork Mines Two Blocks, Then Stalls as Miner Support Stays Below 3%

story · 3 sources

Bitcoin entered mandatory signaling for BIP-110 at block 961,632, according to CoinDesk. BIP-110 is a proposed one-year change that would limit non-financial data on Bitcoin, and it has sparked debate over how block space should be used, according to The Block.

Miner support for the proposal stood below 3% as mandatory signaling began, according to Cointelegraph, which reported that the deployment would test whether enforcing nodes could sustain the change given the limited hashpower behind it, with a hard-fork fallback also under discussion.

Supporters of BIP-110 split onto a separate minority chain enforcing the rule, while the main Bitcoin network pulled ahead, according to The Block.

That minority chain went on to mine two blocks before stopping, according to CoinDesk. Cointelegraph reported that the enforcing branch remains stuck at Bitcoin's full mining difficulty as mandatory signaling continues with little hashpower support, and that the gap between the two chains has widened.

The episode marks a live test of a contested Bitcoin protocol change, with the enforcing chain so far unable to keep pace with the main network's block production.
